[Five Tips for Queer Boys #5]

August 27 2012

August 23 2012

“This was not an exaggeration. The government ignored the issue of HIV/AIDS for years before anything was done. Gay and Queer communities had to form their own clinics because no government agencies cared for them. Back then, being diagnosed was equivalent to a death sentence or extreme debt and poor quality of life/a significantly shortened lifespan.

Things got so desperate that people literally had “Die-Ins”— in contemporary usage this refers to masses of people simulating death in order to protest something (like the War in Iraq). In this case, however, fatally sick people would literally lie down in public places and protest with what little energy they had left until they died. (...) it’s what people had to do because they had no other options.” (source)

Hetero-assimilationism (noun)

Sounds like

Assimilationism is the act of encouraging minority groups to become similar to elite groups. In the context of heternormativity/heterosexism, it is the act of encouraging gay, bisexual, pansexual, and otherwise not-straight folks to be more like dominant straight culture in various ways. Examples of hetero-assimilationist concepts and movements are the push for gay marriage, the push for the repeal of DADT, the butch/femme dichotomy, and the top/bottom dichotomy (though there are many more). Someone who supports hetero-assimilationism and/or actively seeks to be more like the dominant straight narrative is a hetero-assimiliationist. Examples of hetero-assimilationist organizations are the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), GLAAD, GLSEN, and most other mainstream LGBT organizations. Examples of anti-assimilationism and/or anti-assimilationists are BASH BACK and That’s Revolting! edited by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. The major defining quality between LGBT/LGBTQ movements and radical queer movements is the desire to assimilate.

  • “Hetero-assimilationists are looking to be accepted by the elite by conforming to their moral standards of right and wrong.”
  • “I don’t (or do) support hetero-assimilationism.”

Here’s the thing about privilege: it’s unearned.  That’s right, privilege isn’t something that people ask for, nor is it something to feel guilty about.  What’s important is that you understand that your position, your unearned advantages, create limitations and boundaries, whether it’s epistimological (knowledge-based) or material.  This means you aren’t going to know a whole lot of shit about other positions because you haven’t experienced them, and never will.

Boy I Am
While female-to-male transgender visibility has recently exploded in this country, conversations about trans issues in the lesbian community often run into resistance from the many queer women who view transitioning as a "trend" or as an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege. Boy I Am is a feature-length documentary that begins to break down that barrier and promote dialogue about trans issues through a look at the experiences of three young transitioning FTMs in New York City--Nicco, Norie and Keegan--as they go through major junctures in their transitions, as well as through the voices of lesbians, activists and theorists who raise and address the questions that many people have but few openly discuss.

Queer People Not My People

I expected to lose a lot transitioning from a gay identified boy to a trans woman. I’ve lost family, once-called “best friends”, and the ability to find a man on A4A for some anonymous one night stands. What I didn’t expect was the loss of queer communities as a safe space for me.

Robin Hood is So Gay is based on the late thirteenth century ballad "Robin Hood and the Sodomites." The ballad was a humorous but sincere defense of medieval queers. Unfortunately, the Medieval Church censored Robin's gayness, and mainstream depictions of him since then have been of a straight man who lives with a bunch of hot dudes in the forest. With this film, we are recovering the legacy of Robin Hood's faggotry.
