The Estrangement of Trans Gay Men from Cis Gay Men

I have two queer identities and they are at war with each other. I have one queer identity and it is fully integrated. I have one queer identity placed in conflict with itself by outside forces. I have to pick one. I refuse to pick one. There’s always been a troubled relationship between the (cis) gay male community and the trans community. To the extent that when we say “the gay male community,” we mean, “the cis gay male community.” It’s presupposed within the language that “the trans community” and “the gay community” are discrete and nonintersecting entities.

Hetero-assimilationism (noun)

Sounds like

het-er-o-uh-sim-ih-lay-shun-iz-um

Definition

Assimilationism is the act of encouraging minority groups to become similar to elite groups. In the context of heternormativity/heterosexism, it is the act of encouraging gay, bisexual, pansexual, and otherwise not-straight folks to be more like dominant straight culture in various ways. Examples of hetero-assimilationist concepts and movements are the push for gay marriage, the push for the repeal of DADT, the butch/femme dichotomy, and the top/bottom dichotomy (though there are many more). Someone who supports hetero-assimilationism and/or actively seeks to be more like the dominant straight narrative is a hetero-assimiliationist. Examples of hetero-assimilationist organizations are the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), GLAAD, GLSEN, and most other mainstream LGBT organizations. Examples of anti-assimilationism and/or anti-assimilationists are BASH BACK and That’s Revolting! edited by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. The major defining quality between LGBT/LGBTQ movements and radical queer movements is the desire to assimilate.

Usage

  • “Hetero-assimilationists are looking to be accepted by the elite by conforming to their moral standards of right and wrong.”
  • “I don’t (or do) support hetero-assimilationism.”

Groundbreaking Report: "Bisexual Invisibility: Impacts and Recommendations"

Bisexuals experience high rates of being ignored, discriminated against, demonized, or rendered invisible by both the heterosexual world and the lesbian and gay communities. Often, the entire sexual orientation is branded as invalid, immoral, or irrelevant. Despite years of activism and the largest population within the LGBT community, the needs of bisexuals still go unaddressed and their very existence is still called into question. This erasure has serious consequences on bisexuals’ health, economic well-being, and funding for bi organizations and programs.

Boy I Am
While female-to-male transgender visibility has recently exploded in this country, conversations about trans issues in the lesbian community often run into resistance from the many queer women who view transitioning as a "trend" or as an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege. Boy I Am is a feature-length documentary that begins to break down that barrier and promote dialogue about trans issues through a look at the experiences of three young transitioning FTMs in New York City--Nicco, Norie and Keegan--as they go through major junctures in their transitions, as well as through the voices of lesbians, activists and theorists who raise and address the questions that many people have but few openly discuss.

Queer People Not My People

I expected to lose a lot transitioning from a gay identified boy to a trans woman. I’ve lost family, once-called “best friends”, and the ability to find a man on A4A for some anonymous one night stands. What I didn’t expect was the loss of queer communities as a safe space for me.

Robin Hood is So Gay is based on the late thirteenth century ballad "Robin Hood and the Sodomites." The ballad was a humorous but sincere defense of medieval queers. Unfortunately, the Medieval Church censored Robin's gayness, and mainstream depictions of him since then have been of a straight man who lives with a bunch of hot dudes in the forest. With this film, we are recovering the legacy of Robin Hood's faggotry.
